Care home residents fund holidays for young cancer patients

Residents of a Poole care home have raised enough money to bring four, young cancer patients to Dorset on holiday this summer.

Colten Care’s dedicated dementia home The Aldbury donated £2,218.62 – the proceeds of a whole year’s fundraising events – to the Youth Cancer Trust.

The Trust welcomes dozens of young people to Tracy Ann House in Studland Road, Poole every year, to enjoy fun activities and carefree days, away from home and a hospital environment.

The holiday home is run by Brenda Clark BEM, who launched the charity in 1997 shortly after the death of her only child, 21-year-old Tracy Ann.

Brenda who received a British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Honours List in 2017, said: “We were absolutely thrilled to learn of the donation from The Aldbury.

“We receive absolutely no funding so the support and generosity of the residents is so appreciated.

“Their gift, which I believe was raised through a Fete, a Christmas Fayre and a Valentine’s Gala, will pay for four children to come here and enjoy a wonderful and much-needed holiday.”

The Aldbury residents Beryl Spalding and Joyce Holden were given a tour of Tracy Ann House, which is situated close to Alum Chine Beach and offers its young guests a host of facilities including table football, video games, an Art Hut and the use of a nearby hotel swimming pool.

Joyce said: “I’m very impressed. This is an absolutely wonderful place for young people to come and have fun and escape their treatment or illness for a short time.

“I will be telling everyone at The Aldbury what a lovely cause our fundraising has helped.”
